What do I need to begin driving lessons?

You will need a Provisional Driving licence. It is essential for you to bring this to each lesson, and you cannot have a lesson without one.

To obtain your Provisional Driving licnece, you can collect a D1 form from the Post Office. Send this off, together with your birth certificate/passport and a small photo to the DVLA. It will take approximately 10-14 days to arrive. The DVLA website has further details on how to apply for a Provisional Driving licence.

You must be a miminum age of 17 to learn to drive in the UK, however you can apply for your licence 3 months before your 17th birthday.

Booking a lesson

Once you have received your Provisional Driving Licence you can book a lesson. Please view our Conatact Us page for information on how to book, and view our Prices page for information on the cost.

As we are franchised with the AA Driving School, you can also visit their website to see any offers and promotions available.

Theory and Practical Tests

Theory Test

During your lessons you will gain knowledge in the theory of driving, as well as the practical side. To become a Full UK Driving Licence holder you must pass your theory test. You cannot book your practical test without a certificate for your theory test. The aim of the theory test is to enahnce your driving as well as keeping you and other drivers safe.

The theory test consists of two parts - a multiple choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test. You can book your test online or by phone.

Practical Test

Once you have successfully passed your theory test and have reached an appropriate skill level in your driving, your instructor will let you know it is time to book your practical test. Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. You will then start your practical driving test which will include some specific manoeuvres. The whole test should last about 40 minutes.

If you Pass...

If you pass and have a photocard driving licence issued after 1 March 2004 the examiner will ask you if you want your full driving licence issued to you automatically.

If you want to use this service, the examiner will take your old licence off you, scan the details and send them electronically to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You will then be given a pass certificate to prove you passed your test. DVLA will then send you your new full licence by post within four weeks of you passing your practical test.

If you pass your test but do not want to use this automatic service, or have a licence issued before 1 March 2004, you will be given a pass certificate by the examiner. On the back of the pass certificate it tells you what you need to do next. This involves sending your licence and appropriate fee to DVLA who will then check your application and issue you with a new full licence.

If you Fail...

If you fail the test you should ask the examiner for some feedback to help prepare yourself for your next test. Your driving report form will also show you where you made any mistakes. You can take another practical test 10 working days after your car test.
